Ranked by review-weighted Google rating (August 2026), Sydney’s best independent car rental operators are led by CarNet Rentals (5.0★ across 363 ratings, free metro delivery on week-long hires), ZA Car Rental (5.0★) and Spotto Car Rentals (4.9★). Budget daily hire starts at $22/day on a month or more (CarNet) and $29/day short-term (Eazy), weekly plans from $150/week (Shad Rentals, which advertises no credit check, no income check and no visa requirement), $200/week (Hornsby) and $300/week all-inclusive for rideshare (ZA, usable on Uber, Ola, DiDi and the food-delivery apps) — all Australian-owned Sydney locals, no international chains or national networks.
Sydney’s best-rated rental operators aren’t at Mascot — they’re in the west: Marsden Park, Kings Park, Schofields, Blacktown. That’s where the owner-operated fleets live, and on Google they comfortably outscore the airport chains. We ranked all 41 rated car rental operators in Greater Sydney and kept only the true independents: Australian-owned, Sydney-local, no international chains or national networks.
How we ranked them
Every operator was pulled from Google Maps in August 2026 and scored with a transparent points system: every tenth of a star above 4.0 is worth 10 points, and every tenfold increase in ratings is worth 15 — so a higher score always outweighs volume, but a business with thousands of ratings is not invisible next to one with forty. The points are printed beside each entry so the order can be checked. A 5.0 with a handful of ratings can’t beat a 4.9 with hundreds. We excluded international brands, national networks (Carbiz — 14 branches across 5 states, Orana — 6 branches across NSW and Queensland, Go With The Gecko), van- and truck-only businesses, and chauffeur-only services. Prices are the lowest advertised on each operator’s own website; where none is published, we say so.

Best delivered to your door. Free delivery anywhere in metropolitan Sydney on bookings of seven days or more, from a Smithfield base — which turns a week-long hire into something you never travel across the city to collect. The highest-rated operator on this list at its size.
2. ZA Car Rental — 5.0★ (188) · 134 pts
Best rideshare & subscription. A perfect 5.0 across 188 ratings. Uber-, DiDi- and Amazon Flex-ready hybrids and SUVs (Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Kluger) on all-inclusive weekly plans from $300/week — delivered as far as Newcastle and Wollongong.
3. Spotto Car Rentals — 4.9★ (234) · 126 pts
Best budget with new cars. From $33 a day out of Wentworthville and Concord, on a fleet of brand-new vehicles rather than the end-of-life stock that usually comes with that price. Two western-suburbs depots, not an airport counter.
4. Aplus Car Hire — 5.0★ (34) · 123 pts
Best long-term weekly — if you can get a quote. Schofields operator built around weekly plans aimed at students, families and professionals. It trades from a Square page rather than a website of its own, and publishes nothing beyond the headline: no rate, no bond, no age, no kilometre allowance. The rating is real; everything else is a phone call.

Best budget all-rounder in the west. Compacts to SUVs, utes and HiAce vans from Marsden Park, with a rideshare-friendly fleet for Uber and Uber Eats drivers. Quote-based.

Best on the North Shore. Cars, SUVs, 7-seaters, utes and vans from Thornleigh with insurance and NRMA roadside assistance included. From $40/day or $200/week.
8. Ryde Rentals — 4.8★ (121) · 111 pts
Rated well, but you cannot look it up. A West Ryde operation with an economical fleet and a phone-first booking style. There is no link because there is no longer a site: ryderentals.com.au is parked and advertised for sale. The Google rating stands on 121 ratings, so the business earned its place — but everything you would want to check before booking has to be asked on the phone.
9. Shad Rentals — 4.7★ (483) · 110 pts
Best without a credit history. Rideshare-focused hire and rent-to-own from Parramatta Road at Clyde, and the only operator here that states it plainly: no credit check, no income check, no visa requirement. If you have just landed and every counter wants an Australian credit file, start with this one.

Best spread across the city. Three pick-up points — Alexandria, Sydney Airport and Caringbah — so a hire can start at the terminal and end in the south, or the other way round. Straightforward budget fleet with no counter theatrics.
What the list says about Sydney’s rental market
The geography is striking: nine of the ten operate out of Western Sydney and the Hills — Marsden Park, Kings Park, Schofields, Blacktown, Tallawong — where yard space is cheap and the rideshare workforce lives. The CBD keeps only the luxury niche. And like Brisbane, the weekly all-inclusive model is the growth story: ZA’s $300/week rideshare plans and Aplus’s $189/week long-term hire both bundle insurance into one recurring payment.
