The short answer
Adelaide has three independent car rental operators with a verified track record and a working website (August 2026): Rent Wize Cars (5.0★ across 203 ratings, long and short term from $175/week with a rent-to-buy path), UB Cars (4.9★ across 141 ratings, built for rideshare drivers) and Horizon Car Rentals (4.9★, contactless pickup from $35/day). It is a short list on purpose — the rest of the city’s well-rated names are either national networks, accident-replacement fleets, luxury and wedding hire, or sites that no longer load.
Adelaide is the largest Australian city without a serious independent rental scene online. The businesses exist — several hold 4.9★ across a hundred-plus ratings — but a surprising number of them cannot be checked, because their websites are broken, parked or gone. This list is therefore short and says why.
How we ranked them
Every rated car rental agency in Greater Adelaide was pulled from Google Maps in August 2026, through the Places API across the whole metropolitan area rather than by hand, and scored with a points system — so a 5.0 with a handful of ratings can’t beat a 4.9 with hundreds. The floor is 15 ratings and 4.3★. We excluded international brands and national networks, accident-replacement fleets, chauffeur and wedding services, and dealerships that also rent. The count beside each rating is Google’s ratings total, which includes people who left stars without writing anything. Prices are the lowest advertised on each operator’s own website.
We also excluded four well-reviewed operators whose websites do not work — one returns a Wix domain error, one a hosting default page, one a 404. A ranking is a claim about a business, and we would rather leave a gap than describe one we could not read.

1. Rent Wize Cars — 5.0★ (203) · 135 pts
Best overall. Edwardstown, and the only operator here running long and short term side by side with a rent-drive-buy path — the hire can go toward owning the car rather than disappearing. A perfect 5.0 across 203 ratings is the strongest combination in the city.
2. UB Cars — 4.9★ (141) · 122 pts
Best for rideshare. Lockleys, built specifically for Uber and DiDi drivers, with published weekly price plans instead of a quote form. If the car is how you earn rather than how you holiday, the terms here are written for that.
3. Horizon Car Rentals — 4.9★ (34) · 113 pts
Best budget. From $35/day out of Fullarton with contactless pickup — the lowest published rate on this list, and the only one that lets you collect without a counter conversation.
What we left out, and why
Adelaide’s search results are unusually crowded with businesses that are not car rental: accident-replacement fleets that only serve not-at-fault drivers, chauffeur and wedding services, and dealerships with a rental sideline. None of those help a person trying to hire a car for a week, so none are here.
Two names that appeared in the August 2026 version of this list have since come off it, and it is worth saying which and why. Trend Car Rentals publishes seven depots across four states and builds mine-spec, site-spec and civil-spec vehicles — a national fleet supplier, not a local independent. Access Rent A Car turns out to sell accident replacement and insurance-booked hire; it publishes no retail rate at all. Both are real businesses doing real work. Neither is what this page is about.

- We pulled every rated car rental agency in Greater Adelaide from Google Maps (August 2026, through the Places API across the whole metropolitan area rather than by hand), scored each with a transparent points system — every tenth of a star above 4.0 is worth 10 points, and every tenfold increase in ratings is worth 15, so a higher score always outweighs volume but a business with thousands of ratings is not invisible beside one with forty. A 5.0 with a handful of ratings cannot beat a 4.9 with hundreds, and required 15 ratings and 4.3★. We excluded international brands, national networks, accident-replacement fleets, chauffeur and wedding services, and dealerships.
