The Gold Coast has Australia’s deepest bench of independent rental operators — 72 car rental businesses compared for this page, more than any other city in this series. Tourism keeps the airport counters busy, a fast-growing weekly-subscription cluster serves rideshare drivers and locals who’d rather not own a car, and family-run operators outscore the airport chains almost entirely on Google rating. We ranked every one of them on a Bayesian average — the same method behind our Brisbane list — and kept only the true independents: Australian-owned, Gold Coast-based, no international chains or national networks.

Read the “Weekly from” column and you have the real state of this market: not one of the Gold Coast’s ten best-rated independents publishes a weekly price. Two bill weekly without naming a figure; the rest quote daily or not at all. That is not a small detail — it is why this table, and the phone call it sends you to, exist.

1. Surfers Rent A Car — 5.0★ (314) · 4.922 adjusted · Mermaid Waters

Best rated in the city, and the Coast’s original independent. Its own site says it has been “providing affordable quality car rentals” since 1975, and today still opens with “servicing Gold Coast and Brisbane for over 35 years.” It runs an instant-quote booking widget rather than a price list — there is no published day or week rate anywhere on the site — with depots at Mermaid Waters, Currumbin and Gold Coast Airport locally, plus Eagle Farm and Brisbane Airport (its own, separate Brisbane listing).

Zero insurance excess for drivers 25 to 85; $2,500 excess for 21-to-24-year-olds, and $2,950 for 20-year-olds — its stated minimum age. Bond is a $500 credit-card pre-authorisation, frozen rather than charged, released 3 to 7 business days after return. Free additional drivers, no admin fee, no airport levy, no under-25 surcharge, no Visa/Mastercard surcharge (Amex carries 3%) and debit cards accepted with no surcharge. An overseas licence works if it is in English; if not, an International Driving Permit or passport is required. Pay in full at booking for a 5% discount.

Who it’s for: the best-rated desk on the Coast, and 20-year-olds who would be turned away outright elsewhere. Who it’s not for: anyone who wants a number before they start a booking — everything here is an instant quote, not a price list.

2. Surfers Rent A Car — Gold Coast Airport — 5.0★ (151) · 4.859 adjusted · Currumbin

The same business as above — one website, one set of policies — but a separate Google Business listing for its Currumbin depot, a few minutes from Gold Coast Airport, with its own 151 ratings. Every policy in entry 1 applies here too: instant-quote pricing, zero excess 25–85, $500 bond pre-authorisation, debit cards accepted, an overseas licence fine if in English (IDP or passport otherwise). Two real Gold Coast addresses, two rating pools, one operator — counted once each, the same way this series counts a business that runs a second depot in another city.

Who it’s for: anyone landing at Gold Coast Airport who wants the same record as entry 1 without the drive to Mermaid Waters. Who it’s not for: the same as above — no published price, quote only.

3. Network Rentals — 4.9★ (481) · 4.856 adjusted · Surfers Paradise

Second-most-reviewed operator on this list. A single counter at 141 Ferny Ave, Surfers Paradise, running cars and trucks with its own rideshare product. No day or week rate is published. Its FAQ advertises “we don’t charge an excess if you’re under 25,” but a separate clause in its own terms and conditions adds a damage excess for 21-to-24-year-olds — the two pages disagree, so confirm which applies before you book.

Drivers must be 21 to 75, with no provisional or learner licences accepted, and an overseas licence needs an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation if it is not already in English. Payment is by credit card only (Mastercard, Visa or Amex) — no debit card is mentioned. Its FAQ states a $1,000 bond on first-time rentals, though a different answer on the same FAQ page mentions a $500 pre-authorisation for first-time rentals instead. Rideshare hire adds a $250 setup fee and a bond of four weeks’ rent or $2,000, whichever is greater, paid weekly in advance.

Who it’s for: renters who want the under-25 no-excess claim to hold, and rideshare drivers willing to pay its setup fee. Who it’s not for: debit-card-only renters, or provisional-licence holders.

4. Jetsetter Car Rentals — 4.8★ (570) · 4.770 adjusted · Kirra Beach

Most-reviewed operator on this list — and the one we could not re-read today. Jetsetter’s site returned no content on 17 September 2026, so every fact here comes from Carz’s reading of jetsetter.com.au on 25 August 2026. More than 22 years at Kirra Beach, a few minutes from Gold Coast Airport, running small cars, wagons and people movers.

As of that reading, its advertised daily rates were off-peak only — $45 for a small-medium car, $49 medium-large, $55 family/wagon, $99 for a people mover — each marked “off-peak only,” so none of them is the standard rate. No weekly price, bond, minimum age or licence rule was published.

Who it’s for: families wanting a people mover near the airport at an off-peak price. Who it’s not for: anyone booking in peak season expecting that rate, or anyone who wants the site itself to answer — call the number instead.

5. Cheap Student Wheels — 4.9★ (109) · 4.753 adjusted

The most opaque record on this list. Founded in 2010 by Bond University students, now “Reliable Car Sales & Rentals” across three Gold Coast addresses (Surfers Paradise, Bond University, Gold Coast Airport) open to everyone, not just students. Two Google listings shared this exact name and domain and were merged into this one entry, kept at the address with more reviews (see How we ranked for the duplicate rule).

Neither today’s crawl nor Carz’s 25 August 2026 reading found a rental price, bond, minimum age or licence rule anywhere on the site — its two live pages advertise cars for sale (not for rent) and point everything else to an external booking engine that neither pass could open. We are not carrying over the “$18/day” figure this page previously published: it does not appear anywhere we could read today.

Who it’s for: someone happy to get a quote through the booking engine rather than see a price first. Who it’s not for: anyone comparing prices before they hand over their details.

6. Cheapie Car Rental — 4.9★ (101) · 4.745 adjusted · Upper Coomera

Best published long-stay discount. Family-run from Upper Coomera since 2016: from $40/day for a Hyundai i20 manual up to $46 for a Kia Rio automatic, with a Corolla manual at $42. 15% off from seven days, 20% off from eight weeks — a discount off the daily rate, not a published weekly figure.

Drivers must be 21 to 80 with an open licence held 12+ months. A security deposit is charged to a credit card at pickup; the amount is not published. Its FAQ advertises 80 free km/day (600/week), but its own terms and conditions separately set the odometer limit at 85km/day — the two documents disagree; both charge $0.20/km beyond the limit. No overseas-licence rule is published.

Who it’s for: a budget renter who can commit to a week (15% off) or two months (20% off). Who it’s not for: anyone paying by debit only — the site names a credit card for the deposit and nothing else.

7. Long Term Car Rental — 4.9★ (86) · 4.728 adjusted · Molendinar

The easiest approval on this list. It states plainly that it runs no credit checks and accepts temporary visas, casual or short-term employment, Centrelink and rideshare income. From $21/day, billed weekly and inclusive of insurance, servicing, registration and 24/7 roadside assistance — no minimum or maximum term, no lock-in contract, no cancellation fee. Additional drivers are free, and you can extend with no penalty and no notice period.

Bond runs $500 to $1,000 depending on the vehicle and risk grade, plus the first week’s payment upfront. Insurance excess is $1,750 from 25, and $2,750 under 25 or over 75. Ages 21 to 85. Rideshare and food delivery are allowed outright, with about a week’s notice needed to fit the rideshare paperwork. It accepts a physical debit or credit card — cash is not accepted.

This is the Molendinar branch, at 4 Kamholtz Court. The same company runs a Brendale, Brisbane depot with its own ratings — two locations, counted once in each city, never as a network.

Who it’s for: anyone whose credit history, visa status or income type would fail a check elsewhere. Who it’s not for: anyone who wants an actual weekly number before they call — the $21 is a daily figure, not a weekly one.

8. Boyds Bay Car Rentals — 5.0★ (47) · 4.707 adjusted · Tweed Heads

Best for utes, vans and trailers alongside a car. Gold Coast Airport plus a depot at Tweed Heads, so pickup and drop-off can straddle the Queensland–New South Wales line. Daily from $45 for a Toyota Yaris, $50 for a Corolla, $65 for a Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, $66 for a Hilux ute or Hiace van, and $110 for a car trailer with winch. Unlimited kilometres on all local bookings.

A credit-card hold is taken as a security deposit; no amount is published, and neither is a minimum age or a licence rule. Weekend and public-holiday bookings are by appointment only.

Who it’s for: anyone who needs a ute, van or trailer alongside a car, or picking up right at the border. Who it’s not for: a same-day weekend booking — appointment only.

9. NCT Rentals — 4.9★ (56) · 4.679 adjusted · Nerang

Best own-car alternative. A 40-year operator based in Nerang, servicing most of the central Gold Coast from Ashmore to Worongary. Its fixed weekly payment covers servicing, maintenance, registration and insurance on Camry and Corolla sedans and Hilux utes — but the amount itself is not published anywhere on the site. Seven-day minimum, and it delivers the vehicle to you.

No bond, minimum age or licence rule is published.

Who it’s for: someone who wants the car delivered and one weekly number instead of daily add-ons — once they have called for that number. Who it’s not for: anyone who wants that number, or any policy detail, in writing first.

10. Jeepz Car Rental — 4.9★ (47) · 4.659 adjusted · Surfers Paradise

Best convertibles. Jeep Wrangler, Mazda MX-5 and Mini Cooper convertibles from the Surfers Paradise Bus Transit Centre, with meet-and-greet at Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Brisbane airports. Its published rate is for three days or more; no bond amount or minimum age is stated.

No P-plate (provisional-licence) drivers. A valid licence, a credit card and a passport are all required — read together, that means an overseas licence is workable with a passport for identification, but a debit card alone will not do. Excess cleaning is a $35 fee; unpaid tolls or fines carry a $49 admin fee. There are no refunds — only a credit toward a future rental. Its terms state a last-updated date of June 2020, so some of the above may since have changed.

Who it’s for: a Gold Coast visitor wanting a convertible for three days or more. Who it’s not for: provisional-licence holders, weekly rideshare drivers (this is a tourist fleet), or anyone who wants a refund rather than a credit.

Just outside the ten

AllCoast Car Rentals (5.0★ over 30 ratings · 4.645 adjusted · Gold Coast Airport) and Renting Cars (5.0★ over 24 · 4.616 · Southport) sit just below the cut. AllCoast — family-run by Jimmy and Lizzy for 15 years — is the Coast’s large-car specialist (Tarago and Kia Carnival 8-seaters, unlimited kilometres) but publishes no price, bond, age or licence rule at all; you book by calling Jimmy.

Renting Cars is long-term only — a four-week minimum — and is the one operator across this entire page that names an actual weekly price: $179/week. Its $500 bond, minimum age of 21 (open licence, no L or P) and its overseas-licence rule (English licence, or an International Driving Permit and passport) are all published, and it accepts a credit or bank (debit) card.

How we ranked these operators

Every operator was pulled from Google Maps in September 2026 and ranked on a Bayesian average — the same method IMDb uses for its Top 250, and the one this series uses in every city. Every business starts with 50 notional ratings at the market average, and its real ratings are added to those. The market average is 4.432★, measured across the 677 independent car rental operators in our national census, recomputed with each run. A business rated by 481 people is judged almost entirely on its own record; one rated by 47 is pulled further back toward the market. The floor stays: at least 15 ratings and 4.3★. Of the Gold Coast’s 72 car rental businesses compared, 11 were classified but never rated on Google, and 29 pass the floor.

This replaces a points system. The version of this page published in July and August 2026 scored operators with a tenth-of-a-star/tenfold-reviews points formula rather than the Bayesian average. Switching formulas moved four listings: two entered the ten for the first time, and two dropped out.

Surfers Rent A Car — Gold Coast Airport enters at rank 2. It is not a new business — it is a second Google Business listing, for the Currumbin depot, of the same company already ranked first under its Mermaid Waters listing. Two real addresses, two rating pools, kept as two entries — the same rule that keeps Long Term Car Rental’s Brendale and Molendinar depots separate across our Brisbane and Gold Coast pages.

Network Rentals enters at rank 3. The page this replaces excluded it as an alleged “50+ location” national network. We could not find any evidence for that in today’s reading — its site (networkrentalsgc.com.au, three pages) shows exactly one address, 141 Ferny Ave in Surfers Paradise, and no other branch is named anywhere on it. We are including it on today’s evidence; if a genuine multi-branch structure surfaces later, this reverses.

First Mile Car Rentals, ranked 3rd on the page this replaces, is excluded outright. Its site no longer describes a car rental business: today it shows an unrelated freight-logistics template (“Logistiqa”) with placeholder client names and zero-value counters, and its terms page returns a 404. We have no way to confirm it is still renting cars, so — the same rule that dropped Brisbane’s ANN BEE for a Google category with no site or recent review behind it — it comes out.

AllCoast Car Rentals, ranked 4th on the page this replaces, falls to just outside the ten on the weight the new formula gives to review count; nothing about its record changed.

Two duplicate listings, handled two different ways. Cheap Student Wheels appeared twice under the exact same name and domain, with no distinguishing suburb — a duplicate Google listing rather than a second address, so we merged them and kept the one with more reviews (109 over 90). A third, differently-named listing, “Cheap Student Wheels Car Rentals Surfers Paradise” (27 reviews, 4.561 adjusted), likely is the company’s known third address, but ranks too low to affect this page either way. Surfers Rent A Car also appeared twice, but with a distinguishing suffix and its own review count each time — a real second address, so both stayed, as explained above.

Excluded by fleet type, not by name. Lewis Auto Hire scored high enough for the ten but hires exclusively to the mining, oil-and-gas and construction industries on its own site — not a car rental for renters. Ferrari Hire Gold Coast rents supercars from $2,000 a day on a $10,000 cash bond — exotic hire, not the independent, everyday fleet this page compares. Rent A Bomb Car Rentals Gold Coast is the same national multi-location franchise this series excludes on our Brisbane page. East Exotics — no website to read, and a name that names its own fleet type — is our lowest-confidence exclusion; we could not confirm it from its own site, only infer it, and flag that here.

Five more could not be verified today. Flag Rent a Car, Queensland Car Hire, Family Car Rentals, and two listings for “OCR” (Coolangatta Airport and Surfers Paradise, possibly the same business under two Google profiles) all have live websites, but none was part of today’s crawl and none was previously published on this page — with no page to read against Rule Zero, we left them out rather than guess. All four rank between 4.489 and 4.602, below the two names sitting just outside the ten, so none of this would change the page either way.

Prices, bonds, minimum terms, kilometre allowances, age limits and licence rules were read from each operator’s own website on 17 September 2026 — never from a directory, an aggregator or a booking site — except Jetsetter Car Rentals, sourced to Carz’s reading of 25 August 2026 because today’s crawl of its site returned nothing. Where an operator publishes nothing, the table says Not published; it never says “no.”

What Gold Coast operators require

Age is published far less often here than in Brisbane. Only four of the ten state a minimum: Surfers Rent A Car at 20 (with a higher excess at that age), and Network Rentals, Cheapie Car Rental and Long Term Car Rental at 21. Cheapie tops out at 80, Surfers and Long Term Car Rental at 85, Network Rentals at 75. The other six publish nothing, which means calling first.

An overseas licence works at three of the ten, plus one more just outside. Surfers Rent A Car, Network Rentals and Renting Cars all want an English licence, or an International Driving Permit if it is not. Jeepz Car Rental asks for a passport alongside the licence rather than a permit. The other six say nothing either way.

The bond is the real cash barrier, and it is rarely published. Surfers Rent A Car and Renting Cars both hold $500. Long Term Car Rental quotes $500 to $1,000. Network Rentals’ own FAQ gives two different first-time figures, $500 and $1,000, on the same page. Cheapie Car Rental and Boyds Bay both require a deposit without a number. The remaining four — Jetsetter, Cheap Student Wheels, NCT Rentals and Jeepz — publish no bond figure at all.

Not everyone needs a credit card. Surfers Rent A Car and Long Term Car Rental both take a debit card with no surcharge, and Renting Cars accepts a “bank card.” Network Rentals, Cheapie Car Rental and Jeepz Car Rental all name a credit card and nothing else — a debit-only renter should call ahead rather than assume.

Weekly vs daily on the Gold Coast

This is the starkest gap of any city in this series: zero of the Gold Coast’s ten best-rated independents publish a weekly price. Two — Long Term Car Rental and NCT Rentals — explicitly bill weekly, but neither states the figure; you learn it by calling. The only operator on the whole page that names one is Renting Cars, just outside the ten, at $179/week with a four-week minimum — not comparable to a short daily hire, since it does not take bookings under a month.

Cheapie Car Rental is the closest thing to a published long-stay comparison: a discount off its own daily rate rather than a separate weekly figure — 15% off from seven days, 20% off from eight weeks. On its cheapest car, $40/day, seven days at the daily rate is $280; with the discount it is roughly $238, or about 15% less. No other operator in the ten publishes both a daily and a discounted longer-stay rate on the same page, so that is the only exact comparison this city’s data allows.

What the list says about the Gold Coast market

Two patterns stand out. First, the operators explicitly built around weekly or long-term billing — Long Term Car Rental, NCT Rentals and, just outside the ten, Renting Cars — all serve the same renter this page is written for: someone holding a car for months, not a week, often driving for rideshare or delivery. Network Rentals and Long Term Car Rental both build rideshare products on top of their standard hire. Second, a distinct tourist niche sits alongside it — Jeepz Car Rental’s convertibles, and the airport meet-and-greet trade at Surfers Rent A Car, Boyds Bay and Jetsetter — which is not who Carz sends renters to, but is real business on this Coast regardless.

The third pattern is the silence. Not one of the Gold Coast’s ten best-rated independent operators publishes a weekly price, in a city where long-term hire is a meaningful share of what several of them sell.
