The Best Independent Car Rental Companies on the Sunshine Coast

Cristobal Galilea · 13 July 2026 · Updated 24 August 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

The Sunshine Coast has five true independent car rental operators with a verified track record (August 2026): 99 Rent a Car (5.0★ across 105 ratings, a weekly and long-term specialist in Mooloolaba with a $600 bond, no fixed weekly kilometre limit and servicing, rego and roadside included), Breeze Car Rental (5.0★ across 64, delivery-based hire plus transfers), Aussie Bargain Car Rentals (4.8★ across 251, twenty years at the airport, hires from 21 to 85 and cuts your damage liability in half for $7/day), Sunshine Coast Hire Cars (4.9★, beside the airport) and Sunny Coast Car Hire (4.7★ across 270, four pickup points and a $0 excess option at $15/day). Everything else rated locally is a truck fleet, a camper brand or a branch of a national network. Two of the five — Breeze and Sunshine Coast Hire Cars — no longer have a working website, so they are listed here without a link.

The Sunshine Coast is the smallest market in this series — and the most misleading one on Google. Search “car rental” here and most of what ranks is truck hire, campervan brands or national networks wearing a local pin. Strip those out and five true independents remain. Here they are, ranked by review-weighted Google rating.

The top 5

1. 99 Rent a Car — 5.0★ (105) · 130 pts

Best long-term weekly. Family-run specialist in weekly and long-stay rentals for workers and extended visitors — the closest thing the Coast has to a subscription operator. Weekly quotes by email.

2. Breeze Car Rental and Transfers — 5.0★ (64) · 127 pts

Best delivered hire. No counter at all: the car comes to your door or the airport, and the same team runs private transfers to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Noosa. 10% off long-term hires. (Their website is being rebuilt — book via their Facebook page or phone.)

3. Aussie Bargain Car Rentals — 4.8★ (251) · 116 pts

Clearest on insurance, and the widest age range anywhere in this series. Twenty years beside the Sunshine Coast Airport terminal, with a courtesy shuttle and low-contact delivery. It is the only operator across all nine cities that devotes a page to explaining single-vehicle damage liability — the charge most renters never notice until the car is damaged — and its excess reduction starts at $7/day to halve that liability, covering single-vehicle as well as multi-vehicle accidents. Standard hire is 25 to 80; 21 to 24 pays a surcharge; and 80 to 85 can still hire with a doctor’s certificate, which nobody else here offers. One additional driver free, a second at $5/day up to a maximum of $50 per contract.

4. Sunshine Coast Hire Cars — 4.9★ (19) · 109 pts

Rated well, but you cannot look it up. Beside Sunshine Coast Airport, with a reputation built on free pickup and resort delivery. There is no link because there is no longer a site: carhiresunshinecoast.com.au is parked and advertised for sale. We have left the earlier $25/day figure off this entry rather than repeat a price we can no longer check.

5. Sunny Coast Car Hire — 4.7★ (270) · 106 pts

Best coverage. Family-owned with four pickup points across the Coast — two in Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland and the Novotel Twin Waters — serving tourists and cruise passengers, small cars to convertibles. Quote-based.

What the short list says about the market

A coast with a growing airport, a cruise stop and this few independent car rental operators is a market with room in it. The five that exist rate superbly (4.7–5.0★) — demand isn’t the problem; supply is. If you’ve ever considered starting a rental fleet, this is what an underserved market looks like.

Compiled by the team at Carz, which also builds the software some of these operators run on. We say it here rather than bury it: you should know who wrote a ranking before you decide what to do with it. Nothing on this page is paid for, and no operator can buy a position on it. Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest car rental on the Sunshine Coast?
Nobody on the Coast publishes an open rate any more — the one operator that did, Sunshine Coast Hire Cars, has lost its website. Every one of the five quotes per booking: 99 Rent a Car works on weekly quotes and includes servicing, rego and roadside with a $600 bond; Breeze offers 10% off long-term hires; Sunny Coast Car Hire charges $15/day to take the excess to zero and includes 100km a day that accumulates over the hire; and Aussie Bargain halves your damage liability for $7/day.
Why are there so few independents on the Sunshine Coast?
The rated “car rental” results are mostly truck-hire yards, campervan brands and branches of national networks. After excluding those — plus a Tasmanian multi-state operator that lists a local presence — only five verified local independents remain. Small list, honest list.
How was this ranking calculated?
We pulled every rated rental operator on the Sunshine Coast from Google Maps (August 2026), scored each with a transparent points system — every tenth of a star above 4.0 is worth 10 points, and every tenfold increase in ratings is worth 15, so a higher score always outweighs volume but a business with thousands of ratings is not invisible beside one with forty. The count beside each rating is Google’s ratings total, which includes people who left stars without writing anything. Prices are the lowest advertised on each operator’s own website.
