Cairns is the country’s purest tourist rental market, and its independents own the top of the table. Behind the airport chains there is a layer of family-run operators — Palm-Cove-based, Smithfield-based, on Sheridan Street — quietly outscoring every chain branch on Google. We ranked every rated car rental operator in Greater Cairns and kept only the true independents: Australian-owned, Cairns-local, no international franchises. This page is written for someone hiring by the week or the month, not for a three-day reef trip.

Read down the “Weekly from” column and you have the real state of this market: none of Cairns’s ten best-rated independents publishes a weekly price, and only three of the ten publish a daily-from number (Cairns Vehicle Hire from $85, Cruising from $69 and Palm Cove Rent a Car from $25). The other seven quote on request, often through a best-rate guarantee on the booking engine. That is why comparing weekly hire in this city is so hard, and why this table exists.

1. Palm Cove Rent a Car — 5.0★ (423) · 4.940 adjusted · Palm Cove

Highest-rated independent in FNQ. Run by Bill and Tracey out of Williams Esplanade in Palm Cove, north of the airport — a five-minute drive from the reef-side resorts and the only operator in the top ten with a 5.0 across four hundred-plus ratings. The fleet is small and personal (Suzuki Swift from $25/day, Camry from $38, Corolla and Mazda 3 from $80), and the day-to-day policy is friendly enough that the site prints “No minimum hire” in bold.

The headline number is the simplest: kilometres are unlimited, free delivery covers Sea Temple, Mango Lagoon, the Sebel and anywhere else in Palm Cove or Clifton Beach, and a 24-hour drop-off window lets you return at any hour. The headline costs are the strict ones in this market: an insurance excess of $1,500, drivers must be 25 to 75 with at least twelve months’ experience, and the 4WD and Cape York market is not what this car does — they sell small cars to people staying a few days.

Who it’s for: a reef-trip couple who want unlimited kilometres, no minimum stay and a Suzuki Swift waiting at the door of the resort. Who it’s not for: a long-stay renter comparing a published weekly rate (none here), or anyone under 25 — the 25-to-75 band is a hard door, and one of the strictest on this list.

2. Cairns Vehicle Hire — 5.0★ (389) · 4.935 adjusted · Cairns City

Best overall. The youngest operator in the top ten, founded in 2022, with a brand-new fleet running from a city desk on Spence Street and a Smithfield depot, plus a price-match promise. The published daily rate starts at $85 for an MG 3, rising through MG ZS ($95), Haval Jolion or MG 5 ($110), Haval H6 ($120), an 8-seat Kia Carnival or a dual-cab ute ($165), and a prestige line that runs to an Audi SQ5 or RS 3 at $495/day and an RS e-tron GT at $995. Free delivery covers every city and beach hotel.

It is the most restrictive operator on this list on two things the others leave open. The terms ban taking the vehicle outside Queensland, and the same clause forbids “the carriage of passengers and/or property for hire or reward” — which is the legal way of writing “no Uber, no DiDi, no food delivery”. A rideshare driver looking for weekly hire in FNQ should stop here: this operator is explicitly not for them.

What it does not publish is just as long. No weekly rate. No bond amount. No kilometre allowance. No minimum age. No overseas-licence rule. No credit-card requirement. The site says “no limitations of minimum hire period” and otherwise hands every other decision to the quote form. That is a real gap in the table above, and we are not going to invent rules the operator has not written down.

Who it’s for: a tourist who wants a recent-model fleet, a price-match promise and a free delivery to the hotel. Who it’s not for: a rideshare or delivery driver, anyone driving interstate, or anyone budgeting a weekly number before they call.

3. Right Price Car Rentals — 4.9★ (777) · 4.872 adjusted · Cairns North

Most-reviewed independent in Cairns, with the strictest policy book on the list. Out of Sheridan Street, three minutes from the airport, running Hyundai Venues, MG 3s and Outlanders under the same roof as Right Price Auto Group. The site’s headline is the No.1-in-Cairns best-rate guarantee, but the published detail is what earns the 777 ratings: $2,000 insurance excess as a pre-authorisation on Visa, Mastercard or Amex — debit accepted without surcharge — and a published driver band of 21 to 80 with surcharges and restrictions between 21-24 and 76-80.

The terms are unusually precise for Cairns. An International Driving Permit is accepted only if it is recorded in the Roman alphabet — non-Roman licences need an official translation, and Chinese drivers can use a China National Certificate alongside the IDL. Provisional licence holders are covered under a separate clause. The driving boundaries are tighter than anyone else’s on the list: no unsealed roads, no off-road, and you may not enter or leave the Northern Territory or Western Australia; outside a 200 km radius of the nearest RACQ depot the renter pays any tow.

Who it’s for: a budget-conscious renter within the radius, on a Visa or Mastercard debit, who wants every rule in writing before they pick the car up. Who it’s not for: anyone planning to drive to Cape York or the Bloomfield Track (explicitly forbidden by name), or anyone who cannot put $2,000 on a card — that one number decides where you can rent, before price ever comes into it.

4. BettaCNS Car Hire — 4.9★ (657) · 4.867 adjusted · Cairns Airport

Best airport transfers. Locally owned and based at 397 Lake Street, on the airport side of Cairns, with free transfers from and to the terminal from 4am to 10pm — the widest airport-transfer window on this list, and one of the few Cairns operators with a shuttle bus actually named on the site. The fleet is recent (models 2022-2026) and the guarantee is the one BettaCNS leans on: zero excess options, no hidden fees, and the insurance is mandatory, always on, and covers the windscreen and tyres.

Kilometres are unlimited within the allowed area, which is the only km policy on the list that uses the qualifier — the difference matters for Cape York trips, where other operators count from the depot and this one counts from the permitted geography. Bond is a 10% deposit to book, with a refundable security bond at pickup whose amount is in the rental terms but not on the homepage. Payments go through Stripe, so the major debit and credit cards are accepted.

What it does not publish is the rest of the table above: no minimum age, no maximum age, no overseas-licence rule. That is not the same as “no rule” — it means the rule comes back by phone.

Who it’s for: an early-morning or late-night flight, a renter who wants a shuttle at the door, and anyone who does not want to think about insurance excess options at the counter. Who it’s not for: anyone under 25 who needs an age rule in writing first.

5. Mini Car Rentals — 4.8★ (2,200) · 4.792 adjusted · Cairns City

The biggest review count on this page. 2,200 ratings is more than three times anyone else’s, and almost four times Cairns Vehicle Hire’s. “Mini rates for mini budgets” has been the tagline since the late 1980s, and the fleet reflects it — Hyundai Accent and Venue, Kia Carnival and Picanto, Mazda MX-5, MG 3 Core — with branches at 134 Sheridan Street, the airport, Palm Cove, Port Douglas, Cape Tribulation, Mission Beach and Cooktown.

The policy book is the one summary that fits on a postcard: $1,000 bond frozen as a pre-authorisation on a credit card (waived if you buy extra cover), drivers from 21 to 75, a credit card required, kilometres unlimited, and basic insurance included. Additional drivers are $10 each, charged once. International drivers must bring a translation. No published weekly rate, and the daily rate comes through the booking engine.

Who it’s for: a renter who wants the largest review record in the city behind the number, and a credit card to put a $1,000 hold on. Who it’s not for: anyone on a debit card only, anyone under 21 or over 75, or anyone who needs the kilometres rule written without the “selected vehicles” qualifier (Mini’s unlimited is on the whole fleet, but other operators on this list qualify theirs).

6. A1 Car Rentals Cairns — 4.8★ (740) · 4.777 adjusted · Cairns City

Best variety in the city. Operating since 1984 out of Lake Street, with airport pickup, free hotel delivery after 4pm and the widest fleet on this page: economy hatches, 7- and 8-seat people movers from $190/day, and a small prestige line of Mustang, BMW convertibles and Jeep Wrangler alongside the family cars.

The age rule is the one to read carefully. The 28-year minimum applies to the prestige and convertible cars only; the rest of the fleet has no published minimum age. The driving boundaries are the most generous on this list: 1-day rentals reach Cape Tribulation in the north and Mission Beach in the south with 400 km included, and a minimum 5-day rental extends the range to Cooktown and Airlie Beach. No weekly rate. No bond amount. No overseas-licence rule.

Who it’s for: a family or group who needs a people mover at a published number, or anyone hiring for five or more days who wants to drive as far as Cooktown. Who it’s not for: a 25-year-old renting a Mustang for the weekend — A1 is the only operator on the list that publishes an age rule, and it is on the prestige cars, not on the economy fleet.

7. Trinity Beach Car Rentals — 4.9★ (112) · 4.756 adjusted · Trinity Beach

The clearest pricing on this page. Out of Trinity Beach Road, north of Cairns, with instant online confirmation rather than the quote-request form most of the list still uses. Three days is the minimum, kilometres are unlimited from five days (100 km/day for 3-4 day rentals), and there are published discounts rather than a published weekly rate: 10% off from seven days and 15% off from fourteen.

The bond rule is the cleanest on the page. With a credit card, no pre-authorisation at all. With a debit card or cash, $500 pre-authorisation. Excess reduction is $16/day down to $500. Drivers must be 23 or over on an unrestricted licence — the only operator on this list that publishes a licence-cleanliness rule. No charge for an extra driver, child seat or EFTPOS. Airport transfers are included from seven days.

The overseas-licence rule is split: in English, no permit needed; in another language, an International Driving Permit or official translation. That is the rule other operators on this list leave in their terms rather than on the homepage.

Who it’s for: a renter with a credit card who wants instant booking and no surprise fees, and a week-long or fortnight-long stay that earns the discount. Who it’s not for: a one-day reef trip (three-day minimum), or anyone under 23 or on a probationary licence.

8. Cruising Car Rental — 4.8★ (302) · 4.748 adjusted · Cairns City

Best personal service in a tourist town. Family-run for more than twenty years with depots in the city and Trinity Beach — the owner often does the handover himself, the airport pickup lands within fifteen minutes of touchdown, and low season brings up to 20% off. The fleet is about 100 cars, all recent models, and includes a Kia Rio from $69/day, a Camry from $89, a Haval SUV from $84, an MG Excite from $89 and an 8-seat Hyundai Staria from $159.

Kilometres are unlimited (it sits in the header, in case you miss it on the fleet page) and Visa and Mastercard debit cards are accepted with a hold for the excess amount. Drivers must be 21 or over on every car in the fleet — the minimum-age rule sits beside the price on each model. No published weekly rate, no bond amount, and no overseas-licence rule; the site gives you excess-reduction options but does not print the base excess.

Who it’s for: a tourist who wants the personal touch, the 15-minute airport pickup and unlimited kilometres for a reef-and-rainforest week. Who it’s not for: anyone comparing weekly prices before they call, or anyone who needs an overseas-licence rule in writing.

9. Gem Rent-A-Car — 4.8★ (64) · 4.639 adjusted · Yorkeys Knob

Door-to-door service across eleven suburbs. Yorkeys Knob is home, but the pickup and drop-off reach Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach, Smithfield, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove, Redlynch, Manunda, Cairns, Woree and Ellis Beach — the largest door-to-door zone on this list by number of suburbs. “More than twenty years operating” is the only operating-history line that appears this high on the rating list.

Drivers must be 21 or over and fully licensed — Gem is the only operator on this page that explicitly says no probationary licences, which is the same rule Beepz publishes in Brisbane and earns a Beepz customer for. Licences must be in English or have a translation. The insurance excess starts at $2,750, the highest published number on the list, “subject to change without notice“ — and Gem recommends taking out a comprehensive travel-insurance policy with car-hire excess cover, which is the operator itself telling you the price.

No published weekly rate. No published bond. No credit-card or debit-card requirement. No km rule. No rideshare rule either way. The terms do explicitly ban unsealed roads, with “fines apply” in the same sentence.

Who it’s for: a renter on the northern beaches who wants the car delivered and collected from home, and a 21+ driver with a full (non-probationary) licence. Who it’s not for: a budget renter — the $2,750 starting excess is real, and a rideshare or delivery driver (no policy either way, and the unsealed-roads ban makes a coastal-delivery run risky).

10. Tropical North Car Rentals — 4.9★ (38) · 4.634 adjusted · Palm Cove

The only operator on this list you collect from up the coast. Based in Palm Cove with a second location at Port Douglas and a Cairns office for airport pickups, since 1995. The fleet is small — an MG 3, a Corolla and an MG ZS — and the selling point is the location: if your holiday is north of Cairns (Palm Cove, Port Douglas, the Daintree ferry), collecting here means driving north from the airport, not south through the city first.

Kilometres are unlimited and comprehensive insurance is in the rate, with an excess of $500 for drivers 25 and over, or $1,500 for drivers 21 to 24. Drivers must be 21 or over on a full licence — no probationary. A credit card is required, or a $500 refundable bond. No off-road, on sealed roads only. Pickup and drop-off from your hotel is included.

Who it’s for: anyone whose holiday is in Palm Cove or Port Douglas and who wants to skip the city entirely — collect at the airport, return at the airport, with unlimited km and $500 excess on the driver’s side of 25. Who it’s not for: anyone needing a larger vehicle than a Corolla, or anyone on a probationary licence.

Just outside the ten

Palm Cove Car Rentals (4.6★ over 85 ratings · 4.538 adjusted) is eleventh, the first business outside the ten. Mareeba Car Rentals (4.4★ over 22 ratings · 4.422 adjusted · Mareeba) and Comet Car Hire Cairns (4.4★ over 99 · 4.411) were both on this list in July, and neither lost its place on quality — both are above the 4.3 floor. They sit outside because the ranking changed to a method that gives real weight to how many people have actually rated a business, and 22 ratings no longer outrank 423.

Mareeba is worth a call if Mareeba is your destination: $80/day based on a weekly hire, 200 km/day included (then $0.30/km), drivers from 25 to 75, child seats fitted. Comet Car Hire Cairns publishes no daily rate, no bond, no age limit and no overseas-licence rule — the operator’s site could not be read this session, so the silence on Comet is the operator’s, not ours.

How we ranked these operators

Every operator was pulled from Google Maps in August 2026 and ranked on a Bayesian average — the same method IMDb uses for its Top 250, and the standard answer to the problem every rating list has: a perfect five from 22 people is not the same claim as a 4.9 from 657.

It works like this. Every business starts with 50 notional ratings at the market average, and its real ratings are added to those. The market average is 4.432★, measured across the 677 rated independent car rental operators in our national census. So a business rated by 777 people is judged almost entirely on its own record; one rated by 22 is pulled most of the way back to the market, because 22 ratings are not yet evidence. The adjusted figure is printed beside every entry, on the same star scale, so the order can be checked without trusting us.

The floor stays: at least 15 ratings and 4.3★. We excluded international brands, multi-state networks with three or more branches, and non-rental businesses that leak into Maps data. 33 car rental businesses in Greater Cairns were compared; 15 passed the floor; three were classified but never scored, because they had no Google rating at all; ten were published.

What changed on 17 September 2026, and why. Until this date the order came from a points system that gave a tenth of a star ten points and a tenfold increase in ratings fifteen. Read that twice and the problem appears: gaining 0.1★ was worth as much as multiplying your ratings by four and a half. It produced a result we could not defend. We changed the method rather than the result, and then applied it without exceptions.

One operator fell out. 1300 Meteor Rentals Cairns sat fifth on the old list (4.9★ over 353 ratings). The new method reads it the same way on rating and pushes it up — but its own site says it has service in Cairns, Townsville and Mount Isa, with a fleet that includes mine-spec buses, commercial and mine-spec 4WDs, tray and tipper trucks and trailers. Three branches in one state crosses the network line, the same line that took Trend Car Rentals out of Adelaide on 25 August. The ranking records the number; the methodology removes it.

Comet Car Hire Cairns could not be read this session (the site returned no content), so the operator stays in the directory with its facts blank until it can be verified.

Prices, bonds, minimum terms, kilometre allowances, age limits and licence rules were read from each operator’s own website on 17 September 2026 — never from a directory, an aggregator or a booking site. Where an operator publishes nothing, the table says Not published; it never says “no”.

What you need to rent weekly in Cairns

Age is the first door. Palm Cove Rent a Car is the strictest at 25 to 75 — and the rest of the fleet is not on this list. Mini and Tropical North start at 21, Mini running to 75. Trinity Beach starts at 23 on an unrestricted licence. A1 publishes 28 for the prestige cars only. Right Price and Cruising are both 21. The other three publish no age rule at all, which means you have to ask.

An overseas licence is workable, but the rule varies. Right Price accepts an International Driving Permit only if it is in the Roman alphabet, and adds a specific clause for Chinese licences (a China National Certificate alongside the IDL). Mini Car Rentals asks for a translation. Trinity Beach Car Rentals says English is fine without a permit and other languages need one. Tropical North accepts an overseas licence provided it is full (non-probationary). Gem Rent-A-Car says “English or translated”. The other five publish no rule.

The bond is the real cash barrier. It runs from $500 at Trinity Beach (with debit) and $500 or a credit card at Tropical North, to $1,000 at Mini, $1,500 at Palm Cove Rent a Car, and $2,000 at Right Price. BettaCNS, Cairns Vehicle Hire, A1, Cruising and Gem require a bond but do not publish the amount. If you have $500 available and not $2,000, that single number decides where you can rent — before price ever comes into it.

Not everyone needs a credit card. Mini Car Rentals requires one. Right Price, Trinity Beach and Tropical North take a debit card; Right Price does not surcharge it. Cruising accepts Visa and Mastercard debit with a hold for the excess amount. The other six publish nothing either way.

Kilometres are mostly unlimited in this market, with two real exceptions. Trinity Beach Car Rentals caps 3-4 day rentals at 100 km/day and only opens unlimited km from five days. Mareeba Car Rentals, just outside the ten, runs 200 km/day on its daily rate and charges $0.30/km beyond it. Everyone else on the top ten either publishes unlimited kilometres or does not publish the rule at all.

Rideshare and delivery work is closed in this market. Cairns Vehicle Hire is the only operator on this page that publishes a rideshare rule, and the rule is the opposite: its terms forbid “the carriage of passengers and/or property for hire or reward“. The other nine publish no rideshare policy either way. If you are a rideshare driver looking for weekly hire in FNQ, this list is the wrong tool — and that is worth saying out loud, because Carz usually does serve that market.

Weekly vs daily in Cairns

The break-even lands at about five days — but only one operator here publishes both rates for the same car, so the comparison is approximate. Trinity Beach Car Rentals is the one that publishes the discount structure: a flat 10% off from seven days and 15% off from fourteen, applied to the daily rate. A renter paying $100/day for a week saves $70 at 10% off; over a fortnight the same discount saves $210, before the second discount kicks in.

Cruising publishes only daily rates but offers up to 20% off in low season, which is the same idea without the named number. Palm Cove Rent a Car publishes the cheapest daily rate on the page ($25 for a Suzuki Swift, $80 for a Corolla) but no weekly discount, so the weekly maths on Palm Cove is $175 at $25/day for seven days, or $560 at $80/day — and those numbers are the reader’s arithmetic, not the operator’s published tariff.

This is why the price-comparison sites are the wrong tool here. They are built on live daily inventory from the chains, and the weekly all-inclusive model that Beepz and Cazoom sell in Brisbane does not exist in Cairns at all. Comparing Cairns by the week means going operator by operator — which is what this page is.

What the list says about Cairns’s rental market

Two patterns stand out. First, the strongest independents are tourist specialists — reef-trip transfers, hotel delivery, 15-minute airport pickups, no-minimum-hire Suzuki Swifts waiting at the door of the resort — not the long-stay or rideshare specialists that anchor our other city lists. Second, the weekly all-inclusive model that quietly became Brisbane’s default for long-term hire does not exist here: not one of the ten publishes a $/week number on its own site. The two operators that come closest — Trinity Beach with a published 10%-off discount from seven days, Cruising with a published 20%-off low-season rate — get there with a percentage, not a published price.

The third pattern is the silence. None of Cairns’s ten best-rated independent operators publishes a weekly price, and only three publish a daily-from number, in a city where every one of them will happily rent you a car for a month if you ring up.
