Darwin’s best independent car rental operators (August 2026, ranked by a transparent points system over Google ratings) are Territory Car Hire (5.0★ across 284 ratings, from $49/day with 250km a day included), NT Car Rentals (4.9★ across 708 ratings, the most-reviewed independent in the Top End, in the CBD on Cavenagh Street, $400 bond), Ezy Rent A Car (5.0★, from $60/day, four pickup points), Ready 2 Go Cars (5.0★, Nightcliff, open 24 hours) and Territory Car Rentals (4.4★, from $45/day with unlimited kilometres on hires of a week or more). All are locally owned single-city operators; the international chains at the airport are excluded, and so are the 4WD and camper specialists.
Darwin is a small market with an unusually strong independent scene: the top locally-owned operator here has more ratings than the top independent in Adelaide, a city ten times its size. It is also the market where the rental terms matter most, because the drives are long and much of what you want to reach is unsealed.
How we ranked them
Every rated car rental agency in Greater Darwin — including Palmerston and Litchfield — was pulled from Google Maps in August 2026 through the Places API, and scored with a points system, so a 5.0 with a handful of ratings can’t beat a 4.9 with hundreds. The floor is 15 ratings and 4.3★. We excluded international chains and national networks, campervan brands and accident-replacement fleets. Prices are the lowest advertised on each operator’s own website.

Best overall. From $49/day out of Coconut Grove, and the only operator in the Top End holding a perfect 5.0 across nearly three hundred ratings. Note the name: there is a separate, unrelated Territory Car Rentals further down this list.
2. NT Car Rentals — 4.9★ (708) · 133 pts
Best in the city centre. On Cavenagh Street in Darwin City — walkable from the CBD hotels rather than a taxi ride out to an industrial depot — and the most-reviewed independent in the Northern Territory by a wide margin.
3. Ezy Rent A Car Darwin — 5.0★ (37) · 124 pts
Most pickup points. A perfect 5.0 on a smaller sample, locally owned since 2011, and the only Darwin operator here with four places to collect from: Pinelands on the Stuart Highway, the airport, Palmerston and Casuarina. From $60/day, free cancellation seven days out — but it wants two days’ notice to book, so it is not the one for a same-day change of plan.
4. Ready 2 Go Cars — 5.0★ (17) · 118 pts
Open around the clock. A perfect 5.0 out of Progress Drive in Nightcliff, and the only one here open 24 hours. There is no link on purpose: the business is trading, but its website has gone offline, so booking means the phone. It is the one operator on this list you cannot look up before you call.
5. Everest Car Rental — 4.9★ (20) · 110 pts
Best newcomer. Winnellie on the Stuart Highway, covering Darwin and the wider Northern Territory — the youngest operation here and already at 4.9.
6. Gecko Car Rentals — 4.7★ (51) · 96 pts
Best for utes and vans. Locally owned cars, utes and vans from Winnellie at cheap rates — the one to call when the job needs a tray rather than a boot. Not to be confused with the national Go With The Gecko franchise; this is a separate Darwin business.
7. JJs Car Hire — 4.6★ (62) · 87 pts
Best low-cost in town. Parap, five minutes from the CBD and closer to town than the Winnellie depots — a straightforward low-cost counter rather than an airport operation.
8. Territory Car Rentals — 4.4★ (138) · 72 pts
Cheapest published rate. From $45/day on the Stuart Highway at Winnellie — the lowest open price in Darwin. A separate business from Territory Car Hire at the top of this list, despite the near-identical name.
Before you book anything here
Ask one question that does not come up in Sydney: what happens to the insurance on an unsealed road. Many rental agreements void cover the moment you leave the bitumen, and in the Top End that can mean the road to the thing you drove up here to see. The answer varies by operator and it is rarely on the booking page.
