Darwin is the smallest market Carz ranks and the one where that smallness shows. Of the 31 car rental businesses we count in Greater Darwin, 21 carry a Google rating; of those, 11 passed our quality floor of 15 ratings and 4.3★; and after excluding the 4WD and camper specialists and the multi-state networks, eight true independents remained. They are the operators on this page — and the reason the table below has eight rows, not ten.

It is also the market where the rental terms matter most. Darwin is small by population and huge by distance: Kakadu alone clears 500 km from the city limits, and most of what you came up here to see is not on bitumen. The unsealed-road clause in a rental contract decides whether you actually get to see it — and on this list, only one of the eight publishes nothing about it.

1. Territory Car Hire — 5.0★ (284) · 4.915 adjusted · Coconut Grove

Best rated in Darwin. The only operator in the Top End holding a perfect 5.0 across nearly three hundred ratings, running out of Coconut Grove four kilometres from Darwin International Airport. It does not publish a weekly rate — the home page is a daily quote from $49/day, with 250 km/day included, baby and booster seats at $11/day, and 24-hour airport drop-off with surcharge.

Bond is $300 on a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), $500 on a debit card, including the Basics Card, and no cash. Drivers must be 21 or over on a full unrestricted Australian licence, and no cancellation fee applies. Pickup is at 1/10 De Latour Street, Coconut Grove, with after-hours collection arranged by phone.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants the most-rated desk in Darwin, anyone flying in late and willing to pay the after-hours surcharge, and anyone who wants the airport four minutes up the road. Who it’s not for: renters comparing weekly prices before they call, and anyone whose licence is anything other than full and Australian — neither provisionals nor an explicit international rule is published.

2. NT Car Rentals (Darwin) — 4.9★ (708) · 4.869 adjusted · Darwin City

Most-reviewed independent in the Northern Territory. The Cavenagh Street desk in Darwin CBD — walkable from the city hotels rather than a taxi out to a Winnellie depot — and the only Darwin operator on this list with 708 Google ratings, a record that beats the most-reviewed independent in Adelaide and is more than double the next on this page.

Bond is $400 refundable, taken on a credit card at pickup — Visa or Mastercard — and a credit card is required, not optional. The fleet runs about forty vehicles from economy to luxury, including 4WD. NT Car Rentals runs a complimentary shuttle between the airport, the hotels and the city, and there is a second pickup point at Muirhead NT. Ten years operating.

One caveat worth knowing before you read the rest of this page against it: NT Car Rentals’ website was unreachable when Carz crawled it on 17 September 2026, so every fact in this entry is from our 25 August 2026 read. The rating, the adjusted score and the review count are from the August census and do not change.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants to walk out of a CBD hotel into a rental counter, anyone with a credit card who values the largest public record on the list, and anyone planning to drive to Katherine or beyond — the fleet has the 4WD for it. Who it’s not for: debit-card-only renters, or anyone whose only decision criterion is a published weekly price (there isn’t one).

3. Ezy Rent A Car Darwin — 5.0★ (37) · 4.674 adjusted · Pinelands

Most pickup points. A perfect 5.0 over a smaller sample, locally owned since 2011, and the only Darwin operator on this list with four places to collect from: Pinelands on the Stuart Highway, Darwin Airport, Palmerston and Casuarina. From $60/day for an economy, rising to $80 compact, $90 intermediate, $105 full-size (Camry) and $125 SUV or 8-seat people mover — daily only, no weekly published.

Drivers must be 21 or over, and only drivers listed on the contract may drive the car — adding someone else is an administrative step, not a handshake. Insurance excess is $2,500. Cancellation is free up to seven days out; booking requires at least two days’ notice, so it is not the operator for a same-day change of plan. The contract explicitly prohibits unsealed roads, off-road driving and towing, and defines “sealed road” as asphalt, bitumen or concrete only — relevant in the Top End, where most of the drive is not.

Who it’s for: anyone who needs flexibility on where to pick up — the four locations are spread across the greater Darwin area — and anyone with a week’s lead time who wants a small-car economy rate. Who it’s not for:same-day bookings, drivers under 21, and anyone planning to leave the bitumen. No weekly rate, no published overseas-licence rule, no published debit-card policy.

4. Ready 2 Go Cars — 5.0★ (17) · 4.576 adjusted · Nightcliff

Open around the clock. A perfect 5.0 out of Progress Drive in Nightcliff, and the only operator here open 24 hours. There is no link on purpose: the business is trading, but its website has gone offline, so booking means the phone. It is the one operator on this list you cannot look up before you call.

What we can read is its record: 17 ratings at 5.0, and the operating hours it advertises on its Google listing. Everything else — weekly rate, daily rate, bond, minimum age, licence rule, kilometre allowance — is genuinely unknown to anyone who has not picked up the phone, and the table records it as such. A 5.0 over 17 ratings is not a 5.0 over 200, which is why a Bayesian average exists at all.

Who it’s for: late-night and early-morning pickups, where the rest of this list is closed. Who it’s not for: anyone who needs to compare a price, a bond or an age limit in writing first — none of it exists online, and none of it is invented here.

5. Gecko Car Rentals — 4.7★ (51) · 4.567 adjusted · Winnellie

Best for utes, vans and 12-seaters. Locally owned cars, utes and vans from 10 Raphael Road in Winnellie, with more than thirty years in the automotive industry behind the counter. The fleet is the most varied on this list after Ezy: Toyota Corolla from $60/day, Camry from $70, Hilux single and dual cab utes from $80 and $100, Tarago 8-seater from $90 and Hiace 12-seater from $250. Child restraints are fitted to every vehicle; baby and booster seats are available for hire. Not to be confused with the national Go With The Gecko franchise — this is a separate Darwin business.

The site says, literally: “All prices quoted are based on weekly rates and seasonal demand”, which is as close as Darwin gets to a published weekly number — there is no specific weekly amount, just the daily price that applies when the hire is for a week. 100 km/day is included on every car, the basic excess is $3,000 (reducible), and the contract limits you to sealed roads within 300 km of Darwin. Drivers must be 25 or older on a current licence, and there is a 3-day minimum on wagons, sedans and hatches.

Payment is credit card (Visa or Mastercard) only, debit card with a deposit, no cash. No weekly rate published, no overseas-licence rule, no minimum-term concession for the larger vehicles.

Who it’s for: a tradie who needs a tray rather than a boot, a group of six to twelve who needs the Hiace or the Tarago, and anyone who values a 30-year-old local counter over a chain. Who it’s not for: drivers under 25, anyone heading beyond 300 km from Darwin or onto an unsealed road, and anyone who wants a single number on a page for the week.

6. Everest Car Rental — 4.9★ (20) · 4.566 adjusted · Winnellie

Best for large SUVs. A 4.9 over a small but recent record, out of 482 Stuart Highway in Winnellie, covering Darwin and the wider Northern Territory. Everest is the SUV specialist on this list — the cheapest car in the published fleet is the MG ZS at $99/day, then the GWM Haval at $125, the Toyota Prado GX at $190 and the Prado GXL at $220. Every car carries current insurance, and roadside assistance is available.

What it does not publish is a weekly rate, a minimum age, an overseas-licence rule or a debit-card policy. There is no kilometre allowance stated, no bond amount, and no minimum term. The booking form is the only path to a quote. Contactable by phone, email, Facebook and Instagram.

Who it’s for: a Prado driver, a group that needs the seven-seat GXL, and anyone whose travel day is built around a vehicle type the other operators do not stock. Who it’s not for: anyone comparing weekly prices — none is published — and anyone on a budget; the cheapest daily rate on the fleet is $99.

7. JJs Car Hire — 4.6★ (62) · 4.525 adjusted · Parap

Closest counter to the CBD. Five minutes from Darwin’s city centre on Goyder Road in Parap, JJs runs a low-cost automatic-sedan fleet with air-conditioning and power steering, and the headline rate is published as all-inclusive: taxes and fees included, discounts for longer hires, and a maximum excess of $2,500 for drivers 26 and over. The published rates page does not contain a rate — “please contact us for all short and long term rates” — so the dollar figure is by phone or email.

Conditions are tighter than the rest of the list. Drivers must have held their licence for at least two years. Cars are sealed-road only, with no travel south of Katherine. The published excess ceiling applies to drivers 26 and over; younger drivers are not priced out in writing but the published tier is the one you can compare. No weekly rate, no published bond, no overseas-licence rule, no debit-card policy.

Who it’s for: a CBD-close low-cost sedan rental where the counter is a five-minute drive, not a twenty-minute one. Who it’s not for:anyone needing unsealed-road access (Kakadu’s unpaved roads would void cover), anyone south of Katherine, and anyone who wants to compare a price before they pick up the phone.

8. Territory Car Rentals — 4.4★ (138) · 4.409 adjusted · Winnellie

Cheapest published rate in Darwin. From $45/day out of 30 Bombing Road in Winnellie — the lowest published price on this list — with unlimited kilometres included on bookings of seven days or more. Below the seven-day floor the daily rate applies, but the kilometre allowance is the one thing the operator makes conditional on length of hire. Fuel is full-to-full, with a $3/litre refuelling charge if returned short, and the rate is inclusive of comprehensive insurance.

Drivers must be 21 or older on a full unrestricted Australian licence. Payment is Visa, Mastercard and debit card; no cash, no cheques. Pickup is at the Winnellie office, with free airport pickup arranged in advance, and complimentary pickup and drop-off at CBD hotels. The owner-operator answers the mobile himself and extends rentals over the phone with no published penalty.

Note the name: there is a separate, unrelated Territory Car Hire at the top of this list. Different owner, different suburb, different fleet — Territory Car Hire at Coconut Grove on the city side, Territory Car Rentals at Winnellie on the airport side. They share a name and little else, and the table records them as two independent businesses.

Who it’s for: the cheapest way to hold a car in Darwin for a week or more, and anyone planning to drive past Katherine (the unlimited-kilometre clause is what makes the price real on a long hire). Who it’s not for: a short-term rental — the daily rate is $45 but the unlimited-km promise only turns on at seven days.

How we ranked these operators

Every operator was pulled from Google Maps in August 2026 through the Places API, and ranked on a Bayesian average — the same method IMDb uses for its Top 250, and the standard answer to the problem every rating list has: a perfect five from seventeen people is not the same claim as a 4.9 from seven hundred and eight.

It works like this. Every business starts with 50 notional ratings at the market average, and its real ratings are added to those. The market average is 4.432★, measured across the national census of independent car rental operators. So a business rated by 708 people is judged almost entirely on its own record; one rated by seventeen is pulled most of the way back to the market, because seventeen people are not yet evidence. The adjusted figure is printed beside every entry, on the same star scale, so the order can be checked without trusting us.

The floor stays: at least 15 ratings and 4.3★. We excluded international chains, multi-state networks with three or more branches, and 4WD and campervan specialists. In Darwin, that exclusion was the difference between eleven and eight: three operators who passed the floor by quality were left out for what they actually do.

Three names removed by methodology, not quality. Alice Car Rental Darwin reads as a Darwin local until its own site names the operator as MHS (NT) PTY LTD with depots in Alice Springs, Hobart and Darwin — a three-city, two-state network, which is exactly the pattern this list screens out. Broome & Beyond is a 4WD camper hire company with three locations (Broome, Perth, Darwin); the entire fleet is 4WD campers. Adventure Rentals runs the same model one level deeper — 4WD campers across six depots, Darwin to Perth, with a minimum hire of seven days built into the offering. All three are real businesses with strong ratings; they belong in a Darwin directory, not on a general-rental ranking.

Prices, bonds, minimum terms, kilometre allowances, age limits and licence rules were read from each operator’s own website on 17 September 2026 — never from a directory, an aggregator or a booking site. Where the operator publishes nothing, the table says Not published; it never says “no”. NT Car Rentals’ site returned an empty crawl today, so its entry is from our 25 August 2026 read — the only operator on this list whose facts are dated rather than fresh, and the reason is named in the row, not buried.

What you need to rent weekly in Darwin

Age is the first door. Gecko is the strictest at 25; JJs publishes a 26-and-over tier for its excess; Territory Car Hire, Ezy Rent A Car Darwin and Territory Car Rentals all start at 21. NT Car Rentals, Everest and Ready 2 Go Cars publish nothing, which means you have to ask.

An overseas licence is workable, but the rule is not published. Territory Car Hire’s FAQ names a full unrestricted Australian licence with no international policy either way. Ezy Rent A Car, NT Car Rentals, Gecko, Everest, JJs, Territory Car Rentals and Ready 2 Go Cars publish nothing — every one of them. The only Darwin operator with a published rule is Alice Car Rental Darwin (excluded), and it asks for an International Driving Permit unless the licence is already in English.

The bond is the real cash barrier. Territory Car Hire is the lowest at $300 on a credit card ($500 on a debit card), and NT Car Rentals is next at $400 on a credit card. The other six publish no bond amount at all — including Territory Car Rentals, whose $45/day headline reads cheaper than Territory Car Hire’s $49/day, but the bond comparison is the one you have to make by phone.

Not everyone needs a credit card. NT Car Rentals requires one; Territory Car Hire takes debit with a $200 surcharge on the bond; Gecko takes debit with a deposit; Territory Car Rentals takes debit with no surcharge. Ezy Rent A Car, Everest, JJs and Ready 2 Go Cars publish nothing either way, which means asking.

Kilometres change the price more than the price does. Territory Car Hire caps daily hire at 250 km/day, Gecko at 100 km/day, and Territory Car Rentals gives unlimited on bookings of seven days or more. A Kakadu loop clears 500 km from Darwin; the daily caps on the first two are the real ceiling, not the headline rate. NT Car Rentals, Ezy, Everest, JJs and Ready 2 Go Cars publish no kilometre rule either way.

Weekly vs daily in Darwin

The break-even question is the wrong one here, because none of the eight publish a weekly rate. The cheapest published daily rate is Territory Car Rentals at $45/day, which becomes $315 for a published week if you meet the seven-day minimum, with unlimited kilometres included past the floor. Territory Car Hire is $49/day with 250 km/day included — $343 for the same seven days. Both prices are exact, both assume the week-long commitment, and both still do not include fuel.

For everyone else, the weekly price is whatever they quote you, and the published daily number is the only public input. Gecko’s published daily range ($60 to $250) is the widest on the list, and its site explicitly states those prices “are based on weekly rates and seasonal demand” — meaning the $60 Corolla is what you pay if you commit the week. NT Car Rentals publishes no daily rate at all, which is why its most-reviewed record still does not translate into a number you can compare against the rest of the list without picking up the phone.

This is why the price-comparison sites are the wrong tool for Darwin. They are built on live daily inventory from the airport chains, and the weekly all-inclusive model that Territory Car Rentals and Territory Car Hire actually sell barely appears in them. Comparing Darwin by the week means going operator by operator — which is what this page is.

What the list says about Darwin’s rental market

Three patterns stand out. First, Darwin is small in absoluts: 31 car rental businesses compared in the greater Darwin area (including Palmerston and Litchfield), of which 10 carry no Google rating at all — almost a third of the market is invisible to the rating system that produced this page. The eight that did qualify to publish here represent the top 31% of Darwin’s rental businesses, not the top 1%.

Second, the 4WD and camper specialists dominate Darwin by nota. Of the eleven operators who passed the floor, three were 4WD-camper or multi-state businesses that this list screens out — Alice Car Rental Darwin (multi-state network), Broome & Beyond (4WD campers, three locations) and Adventure Rentals (4WD campers, six locations). All three had higher adjusted scores than JJs Car Hire and Territory Car Rentals, and all three were left out because they are not general rental. The Top End’s rating economy runs on expedition hire, and the general rental market is the smaller half of it.

Third, no one publishes a weekly price, in a market where weekly and long-term hire is most of what the independents sell. Territory Car Rentals sells unlimited kilometres as a seven-day commitment; Territory Car Hire publishes a daily number that includes 250 km; Gecko is explicit that the daily price assumes a weekly rental. The dollar comparison is real, and it is also a phone call every time.
