The short answer
You can rent a car to drive for Uber in Sydney, but not every rental company allows it. NSW authorises the booking platform, such as Uber or DiDi, and puts duties on the vehicle’s owner: it must be registered, roadworthy and pass an annual safety check. Of the 10 independent operators in our Sydney ranking, 2 publish a weekly rate, from $245 a week.
Renting a car is a common way into Uber in Sydney: no deposit on a car, no service bills, and you can stop when the work dries up. Two things decide whether a given rental works. The company has to allow rideshare use, and the car has to meet what NSW requires of a vehicle used for booked passenger services.
NSW rules were read from the Point to Point Transport Commissioner on 2 October 2026; weekly rates from each operator’s own website. Where a rule comes from the state rather than from Uber, we say so.
What NSW requires
NSW works differently from Queensland. The state authorises the booking service provider, which covers Uber and DiDi, rather than issuing a licence for each car. The Commissioner’s page says a booking service provider must be authorised, and that a driver who takes their own bookings counts as one.
The vehicle still has rules. The Commissioner states that the owner of a vehicle used for a booked passenger service must make sure it is appropriately registered and roadworthy, and that all vehicles must pass annual safety checks, even if they are less than five years old. Repairs go through a licensed mechanic, and the vehicle must carry a retroreflective sign showing it is on a booked service.
On a rental, the owner is the rental company. Those two pages do not say whether a hire car needs a different registration class from a private one, as Queensland does, so we do not claim either way. Ask the operator.
DiDi adds its own condition: an inspection completed within the 12 months before you apply.
What a rental costs per week in Sydney
Of the 10 independent operators in our Sydney ranking, 2 publish a weekly rate on their own site. They are listed here, cheapest first, as starting rates read in August 2026.
| Operator | Published rate |
|---|---|
| Sydney Long Term Car Rental | $245/week |
| ZA Car Rental | $350/week |
The rate does not show what is included. Kilometres, bond and excess change what the same number costs you. Appearing here does not move an operator’s place in the ranking.
Which Sydney operators say what about rideshare
Two Sydney operators publish a position we can source and date:
- CarNet Rentals explicitly prohibits rideshare, food delivery and security-patrol use. Read on 17 September 2026 at carnetrentals.com.au.
- Dino Car Rental Mascot gives a 5% discount to rideshare and delivery platform drivers, and restricts its cars to use within NSW. Read on 17 September 2026 at dinocarrental.com.au.
For the other operators, a site that says nothing is not permission. Terms change, so confirm with the operator before you sign. Details on each are on the Sydney ranking.
Uber and DiDi in NSW
UberX wants a 4-door car, an ANCAP 5-star rating and a car no more than 15 years old, with the driver named on the insurance policy. The side-by-side table with DiDi is in our Australia-wide guide.
Before you sign in Sydney
- Ask in writing whether rideshare use is allowed under the agreement.
- Ask who arranges the annual safety check and the registration, and whether they are in the weekly rate.
- Check kilometres: unlimited, or a daily cap and the price beyond it.
- Confirm you can be named on the insurance policy.
- Read the minimum term, the bond and how it is returned.
The rules for the other states are in the national guide.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I hire a car to drive for Uber in Sydney?
- Only from a company that allows it. Carnet Rentals prohibits rideshare (read 17 September 2026), and Dino Car Rental Mascot offers a discount to platform drivers (read 17 September 2026). Many operators say nothing either way, so ask for the answer in writing before you sign.
- How much does it cost to hire a car for Uber in Sydney?
- Of the 10 Sydney operators in our ranking, 2 publish a weekly rate on their own website, starting at $245 a week. The others do not publish one. Check kilometres, bond and excess before comparing totals.
- Can Uber give you a rental car?
- Uber runs a Vehicle Marketplace with rental partners it has agreements with, and its listed rates start around $250 a week. Independent rental companies are not on it. Those are the operators compared in our Sydney ranking.
- Does a rental car need a safety inspection for Uber in NSW?
- The NSW Point to Point Transport Commissioner says all vehicles used for booked passenger services must undergo annual safety checks, even if they are less than five years old. DiDi also asks for an inspection within the 12 months before you apply. Ask who arranges it on a rental.
