The short answer
You can rent a car to drive for Uber in Brisbane, but Queensland regulates the car, not just you. A rented car needs the purpose of use “Booked hire rental” and CTP Class 4 on its registration, and only the registered owner, the rental company, can set that. Of the 10 independent operators in our Brisbane ranking, 3 publish a weekly rate, from $169 a week.
Renting is a common way to start driving for Uber in Brisbane: no deposit on a car, no service bills, and you can stop when the work dries up. Queensland regulates the vehicle as well as the driver. A hire car is not automatically allowed to carry paying passengers, and only the rental company can fix that.
Queensland rules were read from the Department of Transport and Main Roads in August 2026; weekly rates from each operator’s own website. Where a rule is set by the state rather than by Uber, we say so.
The Queensland rule for a rented car
To drive for Uber or DiDi in Brisbane, the car has to be nominated on a Booked Hire Service Licence. TMR requires that vehicle to be registered with the correct purpose of use and the correct CTP class, and the right pair depends on how the car is held:
| How the car is held | Purpose of use | CTP class |
|---|---|---|
| Private or leased | Booked hire, or Public Passenger Service | Class 26 |
| Rental or hire agreement | Booked hire rental | Class 4 |
Registration is changed by the registered owner, which on a hire car is the rental company. If the fleet is registered as ordinary hire, nothing you do after signing makes that car legal for rideshare.
The licence itself is $294.50 a year. It is not renewable and not transferable: it runs 12 months and you apply again, and it does not move with the car if the car changes hands.
The question to ask at the counter
“Can I drive this for Uber?” gets a yes from staff who have never checked. Ask this instead:
What purpose of use and what CTP class is this vehicle registered under?
If they do not know, nobody has arranged it. Ask the follow-up too: are the licence and the vehicle inspection included in the weekly rate, or left to you?
What a rental costs per week in Brisbane
Of the 10 independent operators in our Brisbane ranking, 3 publish a weekly rate on their own site. They are listed here, cheapest first. These are starting rates, read in August 2026.
| Operator | Published rate |
|---|---|
| Cazoom Rentals | $169/week |
| Flex Drive Rentals | $170/week |
| Beepz Auto Solutions | $175/week |
The rate does not tell you what is included. A daily kilometre cap can cost a full-time driver more than the hire itself, and the bond decides whether you can start at all. Appearing here does not move an operator’s place in the ranking.
Which Brisbane operators allow rideshare
We only publish an operator’s rideshare position when we have read it on its own site and can give the source and date. None of the 10 operators in our Brisbane ranking has one on record, so we name none. A site that says nothing is not permission. Ask each operator on the Brisbane ranking, and get the answer in writing.
Uber and DiDi in Queensland
UberX wants a 4-door car, an ANCAP 5-star rating and a car no more than 15 years old. DiDi in Queensland also asks for an ABN and GST registration, a Driver Authority and mandatory training. The side-by-side table is in our Australia-wide guide.
Before you sign in Brisbane
- Ask for the car’s purpose of use and CTP class, and get the answer in writing.
- Ask who pays for the Booked Hire Service Licence and the inspection, and whether they are in the weekly rate.
- Check kilometres: unlimited, or a daily cap and the price beyond it.
- Confirm you can be named on the insurance policy. Uber requires it of UberX drivers.
- Read the minimum term, the bond and how it is returned.
Operators and their published terms are on the Brisbane ranking. The rules for the other states are in the national guide.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I hire a car to drive for Uber in Brisbane?
- Yes, if the car is registered for it. In Queensland a hire car used for booked hire needs the purpose of use “Booked hire rental” and CTP Class 4, and only the registered owner can change the registration. Ask the rental company what purpose of use and CTP class the car carries before you sign.
- How much does it cost to hire a car for Uber in Brisbane?
- Of the 10 Brisbane operators in our ranking, 3 publish a weekly rate on their own website, starting at $169 a week. The rest do not publish one, so you have to ask for a quote. Check kilometres, bond and excess before you compare totals.
- Can Uber give you a rental car?
- Uber runs a Vehicle Marketplace with rental partners it has agreements with, and its listed rates start around $250 a week. Independent rental companies are not on it. Those operators are the ones compared in our Brisbane ranking.
- Do I need a Booked Hire Service Licence to drive for Uber in Brisbane?
- The licence is tied to a nominated vehicle, costs $294.50 a year and cannot be renewed or transferred. On a rented car the vehicle’s registration has to be arranged by its owner first, so ask the rental company whether it handles this and what is included in the weekly rate.
